1955 4to (27.5 cm), 8 ff printed recto. Hand made marbled papers wrappers with tipped in printed label. Collection of Mrs. Olga Hirsch, the widow of Paul Hirsch the celebrated music collector, consisted of over 3,500 sheets of paper and 130 books in paper wrappers or with decorated end-papers. In 1968 she bequeathed this collection to the British Library. This special exhibition was divided into the following groups: Covers, Wood block prints, Embossed papers, Marbling, Modern marbled papers, Paste papers, Modern paste papers, Paper wrappers, China and Japan, Moder lithography.

A history of Russian Hand Paper-Mills and their Watermarks

The work is divided into 2 parts, of which the first and larger part is concerned with the history of paper-making and, especially, of paper-mills in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and Baltic areas. Part II is devoted to watermarks. Five appendixes discuss moulds, chain-line and laid-line dimensions, the time-lag between paper-manufacture and paper-use, the technique of attributing Russian papers to their places of manufacture, and ream-wrapper labels. Appendixes are followed by a list of the 815 watermarks which are reproduced. Lists of dates occurring in the watermarks, a typological index and an index of the letters and words in the marks conclude the text of the volume.
