Lives in Print: Biography and the Book Trade from the Middle Ages to the 21st Century. Edited by Robin Myers, Michael Harris and Giles Mandelbrote
London The British Library 2002 8vo (22 cm), XIV, 208 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. A collection of essays focused on two specific areas: the men and women who earned a living in the production and distribution of books and serials; and how biographies of a widening range of individuals became one of the staples of the business of publishing. The contributors show the development of biography as a published genre from medieval accounts of saints to 17th-century collectors as national worthies, through to the present-day production of the multi-volume "Dictionary of National Biography".

Joseph Cundall, a Victorian Publisher: Notes on His Life and a Check-List of His Books
Pinner Private Libraries Association 1976 4to (28 cm), VIII, 96 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. From the blurb: "Joseph Cundall was notable as a publisher, editor, author, book-designer, and pioneer photographer. Born in 1818, he was trained as a printer but became a publisher in his early twenties and produced many of the most attractive popular illustrated books of the 1850s and 1860s. His career as a photographer was also important, culminating in 1871 when the British Government sent him to Bayeux to organize the first photographic record of the famous tapestry. In this volume Ruari McLean provides, for the first time, a list of works published, edited, written or designed by Cundall, and prefaces it with an account of Cundall's life, as far as it has been possible to discover it from the very few available documents surviving in various branches of the Cundall family, and from the books themselves. In addition to four colour plates the text is illustrated with upwards of 50 black-and-white illustrations, many taken from extremely rare or unique originals, or from proofs, in Cundall family collections which have never before been published."

A Dictionary of Members of the Dublin Book Trade 1550-1800
London Bibliographical Society 2000 8vo (25 cm), xlvii, 675 pp. Publisher's cloth. This dictionary attempts in nearly 2,200 entries to cover all workers in the various branches of the Dublin book trade until the Act of Union in 1800. All grades of workers from apprentice to master, and paper makers, engravers, hawkers and other peripheral traders are considered, as well as the all-important printers and booksellers. Entries naturally vary from one or two lines to one or two pages in length. The aim is to illustrate the working life of each subject by reference to contemporary sources such as records of the stationer's Guild, state papers, imprints, newspaper advertisements, customers' accounts, etc, with documentation for each statement made. Entries will thus give practical clues to dating undated books, as well as provide a basis for further research into individual traders' work and the Dublin trade as a whole. Some account of the history and organization of the Dublin Guild of St Luke (cutlers, painter-stainers, and stationers) appears as introduction.

London Booksellers and American Customers: Transatlantic Literary Community and the Charleston Library Society, 1748-1811
Univiversity of South Carolina Press 2002 8vo (23.5 cm), xxi, 522 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. A history of the Charleston Library Society's book purchasing activities offers a window into the transatlantic book trade during the 18th and 19th centuries, and a chronicle of this early library's influence on southern culture. Founded in 1748 and still flourishing at the start of the 21st century, the Charleston Library Society occupies a position of historical significance comparable to that of the Library Company of Philadelphia, the New York Library Society, and the Boston Athenaeum. Its members provided the initiative for the founding of the Charleston Museum, the College of Charleston, and numerous civic and literary societies. Raven reveals how the Charleston library grew into an effective force for the pursuit of intellectual and scientific interests and the confirmation of the political power of South Carolina's planter elite.

The Evolution of Cambridge Publishing
Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1956 4to (25.5 cm), IX, 67 pp, 14 plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj little foxed and stained, small tear at the top, a bookplate). From the blurb: "The Master of Pembroke's Sandars Lectures for 1954 are here given permanent form. The first lecture, on 'The Bentley Revival', gives new information about the Press's first experiment in Publishing, and the general increase of activity under Bentley's direction in the early eighteenth Century. Recently discovered minutes and accounts of the period are illustrated, and their contents analysed: and Mr Roberts gives an entertaining account of the progress of the Suidas 'Lexicon' through the press. 'After The Royal Commission' shows the beginnings in nineteenth-century Cambridge of a publishing firm as it is understood to-day ; the development of a London publishing-house, the beginnings of advertising, the growth of a 'back list'. 'The Twentieth Century' begins with the publication of the 11th edition of the 'Encyclopaedia Britannica' -- a controversial venture in commercial publishing. It then describes and illustrates the great typographical revival associated first with Mr Bruce Rogers and later with Mr Stanley Morison and Mr Walter Lewis. The later years are of course those in which Mr Roberts was Secretary to the Syndics, and he describes from the inside important stages in the growth of a modern publishing house."

Old Books, Rare Friends: Two Literary Sleuths and Their Shared Passion
Doubleday 1997 8vo (21.5 cm), XII, 276 pp. Publisher's cloth backed boards and dust jacket. From publisher's description: "Louisa May Alcott once wrote that she had taken her pen for a bridegroom. Leona Rostenberg and Madeleine Stern, friends and business partners for fifty years, have in many ways taken up their pens and passion for literature in much the same way. The "Holmes & Watson" of the rare book business, Rostenberg and Stern unlocked the hidden secret of Louisa May Alcott's life when they discovered her pseudonym, A.M. Barnard, along with her anonymously published "blood and thunder" stories on subjects like transvestitism, hashish smoking, and feminism. Old Books, Rare Friends describes their mutual passion for books and literary sleuthing as they take us on their earliest European book buying jaunts. Using what they call ""Finger-spitzengefuhl,"" the art of evaluating antiquarian books by handling, experience, and instinct, they treat us to some of their greatest discoveries amid the mildewed basements of London's booksellers after the Blitz. We experience the thrill of finding one of the earliest known books printed in America between 1617-1619 by the Pilgrim Press and learn about the influential role of publisher-printers from the 15th century. Like a precious gem, Old Books, Rare Friends is a book to treasure about the companionship of two rare friends and their shared passion for old books."
