Catalogue of Twenty-Three Important Armenian Illuminated Manuscripts
Sotheby & Co 1967 4to (25 cm), 58 pp. Publisher's boards. Auction catalogue of a collection of 23 Armenian Gospel manuscripts, one the most important sale of this nature hitherto. Two manuscripts (lot 1 and 2) were illuminated by Thoros Roslin, the most celebrated of 13th century Cilician Armenian artists. Lot 7 is chef-d'oeuvre illuminated by Martiros (16th century). Many of the colophons refer to events in the history of the Middle East, in which Armenians were involved, including the campaigns of Baibars (lot 2 and 3) and the Turco-Polish wars of the 17th century. All the bindings, none of which appears to be later than the 18th century, are of silver or silver gilt.
