An abridgment of the first edition published in 1893 under the title "Die Wahrheit über Emin Pascha". Mehmed Emin Pasha (title "Pasha" was conferred on him by Ottoman authorities, he was born in Polish Silesia in 1840 as Isaak Eduard Schnitzer), a physician and naturalist who added greatly to the anthropological knowledge of central Africa and published valuable geographical papers. In 1878 he succeeded Charles George Gordon as the governor of Equatoria, then Egiptian province in South Sudan. The revolt that began in 1881 had cut Equatoria off from the outside world. The Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, led by Henry Morton Stanley, the last major European expeditions into the interior of Africa in the nineteenth century, rescued Emin in 1888. He was killed in Kongo in 1892 in the service of the German East Africa Company.

Before his death in 1967, the English typographic historian Stanley Morison had drafted a major work examining the history and development of early Italian writing books. It is not only the last major Morison text, but also one of fundamental importance, covering the most important period (and the most beautiful examples) in the history of calligraphy. The book examines the calligraphy of the sixteenth century from Arrighi to Ugo da Carpi, from Taglienti to Celebrino da Udine. As always with Morison, it is full of surprises, for this was Morison’s particular passion, and in the area of stylistic comparisons and close observation, Morison was an undisputed master.

Sotheby & Co 1967 4to (25 cm), 58 pp. Publisher's boards. Auction catalogue of a collection of 23 Armenian Gospel manuscripts, one the most important sale of this nature hitherto. Two manuscripts (lot 1 and 2) were illuminated by Thoros Roslin, the most celebrated of 13th century Cilician Armenian artists. Lot 7 is chef-d'oeuvre illuminated by Martiros (16th century). Many of the colophons refer to events in the history of the Middle East, in which Armenians were involved, including the campaigns of Baibars (lot 2 and 3) and the Turco-Polish wars of the 17th century. All the bindings, none of which appears to be later than the 18th century, are of silver or silver gilt.

An introduction to the facsimile was written by another Polish émigré Gustaw Pawlowski (1842-1913), who was at the time a personal librarian of Ambroise Firmin-Didot. The author, Dirk de Bray (1627?- before 1702), a bookbinder's apprentice, described and illustrated with attractive color drawings what he had learned during his apprenticeship. The manuscript that he made for his own use is the earliest surviving manual on bookbinding.
