John Evelyn (1620-1706) was an English writer, gardener and diarist, one of the founder members of the Royal Society. His library reflected his connection with the Society in the number of major scientific works he acquired. Many of his books were also collected on his travels abroad from such sources as the sale of Cardinal Mazarin's library in 1650. Evelyn's library also included the library of his father-in-law Sir Richard Browne. Most of books were bound in Paris and embellished with tools designed for Evelyn by Abraham Bosse. Examples of the most representative bindings illustrated with color plates.

Morison, Stanley

Politics and script: Aspects of authority and freedom in the developement of Graeco-Latin script from the sixth century B.C. to the twentieth century A.D.

Oxford Clarendon Press 1972 4to (28 cm), [6], 362 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj clipped, little frayed at extremities and stained, ownership signature on front fee end-paper). Edited by Nicolas Barker. "The history of lettering and its place in the history of the western world is the last of Stanley Morison's work's. Political, social, aesthetic, religious and commercial factors affecting letter forms are assessed and discussed, and numerous examples are illustrated." (from the blurb)

Crystal, David

Begat: The King James Bible and the English Language

Oxford University Press 2010 8vo (21.5 cm), VII, 327 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj little rubbed at extremities). This astonishing book "has contributed far more to English in the way of idiomatic or quasi-proverbial expressions than any other literary source." So wrote David Crystal in 2004. In Begat he returns to the subject not only to consider how a work published in 1611 could have had such influence on the language, but how it can still do so when few regularly hear the Bible and fewer still hear it in the language of Stuart England.

Eisenstein, Elizabeth L.

The Printing Revolution in Early Modern Europe

Cambridge University Press 1993 8vo (21.5 cm), XIV, 300 pp. Laminated wrappers (wrappers little rubbed at extremities). Although the importance of the advent of printing for Western civilisation has long been recognised, it was Professor Eisenstein, in her monumental, two-volume work, The Printing Press as an Agent of Change, who provided the first full-scale treatment of the subject. This illustrated and abridged edition of Professor Eisenstein's study gives a stimulating survey of the communications revolution of the fifteenth century. It begins with a discussion of the general implications of the introduction of printing, and then explores how the shift from script to print entered into the three major movements of early modern times: the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the rise of modern science.

The MIT Press 2001 8vo (23.5 cm), VIII, 246 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (minor shelf wear, blind collector's stamp on the half-title). "The discipline of architecture depends on the transmission in space and time of accumulated experiences, concepts, rules, and models. From the invention of the alphabet to the development of ASCII code for electronic communication, the process of recording and transmitting this body of knowledge has reflected the dominant information technologies of each period. In this book Mario Carpo discusses the communications media used by Western architects, from classical antiquity to modern classicism, showing how each medium related to specific forms of architectural thinking." John Evelyn and His Milieu

The British Library 2004 8vo (25 cm), IX, 298 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. John Evelyn (1620-1706) has long been known as one of the best-loved of English diarists. But he was much else besides: gardener, environmentalist, connoisseur, bibliophile, intellectual in government service, influential lay Anglican -- in fact the quintessential virtuoso of seventeenth century England and a key figure in the assimilation of European culture there. These fifteen essays (including "Evelyn's bindings" by Mirjam Foot, "John Evelyn and his books" by Giles Mandelbrote, "John Evelyn and the print" by Antony Griffiths), all by leading experts in their fields, draw on The British Library's exceptionally rich holdings of Evelyn's books, manuscripts and family papers to explore for the first time the full range of his activity and influence.

Oxford University Press 1968 8vo (20.5 cm), VIII, 185 pp, 16 plates. Laminated wrappers (wrappers rubbed, blind collector's stamp and number on the half-title). One of the remarkable facts about the history of Western culture is that we are still in a position to read large amounts of the literature produced in classical Greece and Rome despite the fact that for at least a millennium and a half all copies had to be produced by hand and were subject to the hazards of fire, flood, and war. This book explains how the texts survived and gives an account of the reasons why it was thought worthwhile to spend the necessary effort to preserve them for future generations.

The Vulgate Bible, Volume IIA: The Historical Books: Douay-Rheims Translation, Part A (Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library)

Harvard University Press 2011 8vo (21 cm), xxxvi, 1125 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj and binding warped at the top). From the blurb: "This is the second volume, in two parts, of a projected six-volume set of the complete Vulgate Bible. Compiled and translated in large part by Saint Jerome at the turn of the fifth century CE, the Vulgate Bible was used from the early medieval period through the twentieth century in the Western Christian (and later specifically Catholic) tradition. It influenced literature, visual arts, music, and education during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and its contents lay at the heart of Western theological, intellectual, artistic, and even political history during that period. At the end of the sixteenth century, as Protestant vernacular Bibles became available, professors at a Catholic college first at Douay, then at Rheims, translated the Vulgate Bible into English, primarily to combat the influence of rival theologies. Volume II presents the Historical Books of the Bible, which tell of Joshua’s leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, the judges and kings, Israel’s steady departure from God’s precepts, the Babylonian Captivity, and the return from exile. The focus then shifts to shorter, intimate narratives: the pious Tobit, whose son’s quest leads him to a cure for his father’s blindness; Judith, whose courage and righteousness deliver the Israelites from the Assyrians; and Esther and Mordecai, who saved all the Jews living under Ahasuerus from execution. These three tales come from books that were canonical in the Middle Ages but now are often called “apocryphal,” with the partial exception of the Book of Esther."

The Vulgate Bible, Volume I: The Pentateuch: Douay-Rheims Translation (Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library No. 1)

Harvard University Press 2010 8vo (21 cm), xxxvi, 1151 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. From the blurb: "The Vulgate Bible, compiled and translated in large part by Saint Jerome at the intersection of the fourth and fifth centuries CE, was used from the early Middle Ages through the twentieth century in the Western European Christian (and, later, specifically Catholic) tradition. Its significance can hardly be overstated. The text influenced literature, visual art, music, and education during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and its contents lay at the heart of much of Western theological, intellectual, artistic, and even political history of that period. At the end of the sixteenth century, as a variety of Protestant vernacular Bibles became available, professors at a Catholic college first at Douay, then at Rheims, translated the Vulgate into English, among other reasons to combat the influence of rival theologies. This volume elegantly and affordably presents the text of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, beginning with the creation of the world and the human race, continuing with the Great Flood, God’s covenant with Abraham, Israel’s flight from Egypt and wanderings through the wilderness, the laws revealed to Moses, his mustering of the twelve tribes of Israel, and ending on the eve of Israel’s introduction into the Promised Land. This is the first volume of the projected six-volume set of the complete Vulgate Bible."

Dirac, P. A. M.

The Principles of Quantum Mechanics

Oxford Clarendon Press 1947 8vo (24 cm), XII, 311 pp. Publisher's cloth, gilt-lettered spine (binding little rubbed, corners slightly scuffed). Third edition. English physicist Paul Dirac (1902-1984) is regarded as one of the most significant theoretical physicists of the 20th century. In 1933 together with Erwin Schrödinger he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory. "He is best known for his important and elegant contributions to the formulation of quantum mechanics; for his quantum theory of the emission and absorption of radiation, which inaugurated quantum electrodynamics. Present expositions of quantum mechanics largely rely on his masterpiece The Principles of Quantum Mechanics (1930)." DSB XVII, p.224. The second rewritten edition of the book was published in 1934. The third edition was mostly rewritten again to bring in various improvements. The chief of these is the use of the notation of bra and ket vectors, which Dirac developed since 1939. Other substantial alterations include a new presentation of the theory of systems with similar particles based on Fock's treatment of the theory of radiation and a further development of quantum electrodynamics, including the theory of the Wentzel field.

The third edition published in 1947 was mostly rewritten again to bring in various improvements. In the fourth edition the chapter on quantum electrodynamics has been rewritten. A theory in which the number of charged particles is conserved was replaced by a quantum electrodynamics which includes creation and annihilation of electron-positron pairs. A revised fourth edition appeared in 1967.

Palaces of the Ancient New World (Dumbarton Oaks Pre-Columbian Symposia and Colloquia)

Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collections 2009 8vo (25 cm), VIII, 416 pp. Laminated wrappers (minor shelf-wear). "Among the most sumptuous buildings of antiquity were royal palaces. As in the Old World, kings and nobles of ancient Mexico and Peru had luxurious administrative quarters in cities, and exquisite pleasure palaces in the countryside. This volume explores the great houses of the ancient New World, from palaces of the Aztecs and Incas, looted by the Spanish conquistadors, to those lost high in the Andes and deep in the jungle. This volume, the first scholarly compendium of elite residences of the high cultures of the New World, presents definitive descriptions and interpretations by leading scholars in the field. Authoritative yet accessible, this extensively illustrated book will serve as an important resource for anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians of art, architecture, and related disciplines." Variations in the Expressions of Inka Power (Dumbarton Oaks Other Titles in Pre-Columbian Studies)

Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collections 2008 4to (26 cm), XIV, 449 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "Until recently, little archaeological investigation has been dedicated to the Inka, the last great culture to flourish in Andean South America before the sixteenth-century arrival of the Spaniards. While the Inka have been traditionally viewed through the textual sources of early colonial histories, this volume draws on recent archaeological research to challenge theories on the chronology and development of the Inka Empire and how this culture spread across such a vast area. The volume demonstrates the great regional diversity of the Inka realm, with strategies of expansion that were shaped to meet a variety of local situations beyond the capital in Cusco. Using a range of theoretical and methodological approaches, scholars from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities provide a new understanding of Inka culture and history." Mesoamerica after the Decline of Teotihuacan AD 700-900

Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection 1989 4to (31 cm), VII, 244 pp, folding plate. Publisher's cloth (minor shelf-wear). "This book deals with a transitional episode in Mesoamerican prehistory: the decline of Teotihuacan in the eighth and ninth centuries A.D. If René Millon is correct, that Teotihuacan influenced the entire civilized world of Mesoamerica, the demise of this great city triggered one of the most pervasive transformations in the long history of the region’s civilization. This book examines the cultures of that era and the effects that Teotihuacan’s decline had on them. Papers based on the 1984 Summer Seminar, Cultural Adjustments after the Decline of Teotihuacan." Aztec Imperial Strategies (Dumbarton Oaks Pre-Columbian Symposia and Colloquia)

Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection 1996 4to (31 cm), VIII, 392 pp. Publisher's cloth (minor shelf-wear). Papers from the 1986 Summer Seminar, Empire, Province, and Village in Aztec History. The book is a comprehensive analysis of the economic and political geography of the Aztec empire. It is the fruit of a joint research project among ethnohistorians, archaeologists, and art historians. The authors researched every town in the Aztec empire, recording a set of standard information for each. They drew a new map of the empire by first plotting local towns and city-states and then grouping these by province. This map, the first complete map of Aztec territory since Robert Barlow's 1949 study, reveals new principles of provincial organization.
