Apollo and Pegasus: An enquiry into the formation and dispersal of a Renaissance library
Amsterdam Gérard Th. Van Heusden 1975 4to (31 cm), front., XVIII, 252 pp, 25 plates. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. "The group of Italian Renaissance bindings decorated with a plaquette of Apollo and Pegasus has attracted the attention of scholars and collectors since they were first noticed in print by Yhomas Frognall Dibdin in 1817. Anthony Hobson has submitted the 144 recorded volumes of the collection to close scrutiny. The owner proves to have been a young man whose name had not previously been mentioned in connection with the bindings. The author considers the circumstances and chronology of the library's formation and craftsmen who produced the bindings. Other topics include the relationship between binders and book trade in 16th century Italy and the choice of title and editions in the collection, in particular to what extent it was influenced by a taste for fine printing. The final chapter traces the dispercal of the libary." (from the publisher's description)

Publisher's cloth, red gilt-lettered label. "G. D. Hobson, a leading authority on bookbindings, investigated the origins of the 'fanfare' style and traced its development from France in th 16th century to the 'poitillé' bindings of the 17th century, and to its Italian and French imitations. The work, published in 1935 and now a classic among studies in book history, provides a conspectus of the style of bindings in France from 1570 to 1640, the second part being devoted to elucidate the meaning of mysterious closed S, which appears on so many bindings and other works of art of the period. In addition to 269 bindings described in the first edition, Anthony Hobson adds a further 167 in the supplement, together with important discoveries and corrections, which brings the important work up to date."

The Art of Natural History: Illustrated Treatises and Botanical Paintings, 1400-1850
Washington National Gallery of Art 2008 4to (28.5 cm), 279 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (minor shelf-wear, bookplate). "Making knowledge visible" is how one 16th-century naturalist described the work of the illustrator of botanical treatises. Presenting images found throughout Europe in works on natural history, medicine, botany, horticulture, and garden design, and studies of insects, birds, and animals, the contributors emphasize their artistic as well as scientific values. Illustrators are shown to have been both artists and either naturalists or gardeners, bringing to their work aesthetic judgment and empirical observation. Their fascinating images receive a fresh, wide-ranging analysis that covers such topics as innovation, patronage, readership, reception, technologies of production, and the relationship between the fine arts and scientific depictions of nature.

The Printing Revolution in Early Modern Europe
Cambridge University Press 1993 8vo (21.5 cm), XIV, 300 pp. Laminated wrappers (wrappers little rubbed at extremities). Although the importance of the advent of printing for Western civilisation has long been recognised, it was Professor Eisenstein, in her monumental, two-volume work, The Printing Press as an Agent of Change, who provided the first full-scale treatment of the subject. This illustrated and abridged edition of Professor Eisenstein's study gives a stimulating survey of the communications revolution of the fifteenth century. It begins with a discussion of the general implications of the introduction of printing, and then explores how the shift from script to print entered into the three major movements of early modern times: the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the rise of modern science.

Scribes and Scholars: A Guide to the Transmission of Greek and Latin Literature
Oxford University Press 1968 8vo (20.5 cm), VIII, 185 pp, 16 plates. Laminated wrappers (wrappers rubbed, blind collector's stamp and number on the half-title). One of the remarkable facts about the history of Western culture is that we are still in a position to read large amounts of the literature produced in classical Greece and Rome despite the fact that for at least a millennium and a half all copies had to be produced by hand and were subject to the hazards of fire, flood, and war. This book explains how the texts survived and gives an account of the reasons why it was thought worthwhile to spend the necessary effort to preserve them for future generations.

The Vulgate Bible, Volume IIA: The Historical Books: Douay-Rheims Translation, Part A (Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library)
Harvard University Press 2011 8vo (21 cm), xxxvi, 1125 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket (dj and binding warped at the top). From the blurb: "This is the second volume, in two parts, of a projected six-volume set of the complete Vulgate Bible. Compiled and translated in large part by Saint Jerome at the turn of the fifth century CE, the Vulgate Bible was used from the early medieval period through the twentieth century in the Western Christian (and later specifically Catholic) tradition. It influenced literature, visual arts, music, and education during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and its contents lay at the heart of Western theological, intellectual, artistic, and even political history during that period. At the end of the sixteenth century, as Protestant vernacular Bibles became available, professors at a Catholic college first at Douay, then at Rheims, translated the Vulgate Bible into English, primarily to combat the influence of rival theologies. Volume II presents the Historical Books of the Bible, which tell of Joshua’s leading the Israelites into the Promised Land, the judges and kings, Israel’s steady departure from God’s precepts, the Babylonian Captivity, and the return from exile. The focus then shifts to shorter, intimate narratives: the pious Tobit, whose son’s quest leads him to a cure for his father’s blindness; Judith, whose courage and righteousness deliver the Israelites from the Assyrians; and Esther and Mordecai, who saved all the Jews living under Ahasuerus from execution. These three tales come from books that were canonical in the Middle Ages but now are often called “apocryphal,” with the partial exception of the Book of Esther."

The Vulgate Bible, Volume I: The Pentateuch: Douay-Rheims Translation (Dumbarton Oaks Medieval Library No. 1)
Harvard University Press 2010 8vo (21 cm), xxxvi, 1151 pp. Publisher's cloth and dust jacket. From the blurb: "The Vulgate Bible, compiled and translated in large part by Saint Jerome at the intersection of the fourth and fifth centuries CE, was used from the early Middle Ages through the twentieth century in the Western European Christian (and, later, specifically Catholic) tradition. Its significance can hardly be overstated. The text influenced literature, visual art, music, and education during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and its contents lay at the heart of much of Western theological, intellectual, artistic, and even political history of that period. At the end of the sixteenth century, as a variety of Protestant vernacular Bibles became available, professors at a Catholic college first at Douay, then at Rheims, translated the Vulgate into English, among other reasons to combat the influence of rival theologies. This volume elegantly and affordably presents the text of the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible, beginning with the creation of the world and the human race, continuing with the Great Flood, God’s covenant with Abraham, Israel’s flight from Egypt and wanderings through the wilderness, the laws revealed to Moses, his mustering of the twelve tribes of Israel, and ending on the eve of Israel’s introduction into the Promised Land. This is the first volume of the projected six-volume set of the complete Vulgate Bible."

"He is best known for his important and elegant contributions to the formulation of quantum mechanics; for his quantum theory of the emission and absorption of radiation, which inaugurated quantum electrodynamics. Present expositions of quantum mechanics largely rely on his masterpiece The Principles of Quantum Mechanics (1930)." DSB XVII, p.224. The second rewritten edition of the book was published in 1934. The third edition was mostly rewritten again to bring in various improvements. The chief of these is the use of the notation of bra and ket vectors, which Dirac developed since 1939. Other substantial alterations include a new presentation of the theory of systems with similar particles based on Fock's treatment of the theory of radiation and a further development of quantum electrodynamics, including the theory of the Wentzel field.

Variations in the Expressions of Inka Power (Dumbarton Oaks Other Titles in Pre-Columbian Studies)

"Until recently, little archaeological investigation has been dedicated to the Inka, the last great culture to flourish in Andean South America before the sixteenth-century arrival of the Spaniards. While the Inka have been traditionally viewed through the textual sources of early colonial histories, this volume draws on recent archaeological research to challenge theories on the chronology and development of the Inka Empire and how this culture spread across such a vast area. The volume demonstrates the great regional diversity of the Inka realm, with strategies of expansion that were shaped to meet a variety of local situations beyond the capital in Cusco. Using a range of theoretical and methodological approaches, scholars from the sciences, social sciences, and humanities provide a new understanding of Inka culture and history." The Library: A World History
University of Chicago Press 2013 4to (31.5 cm), 328 pp. Publisher's boards and dust jacket (collector's blind stamp on half-title). "A library is not just a collection of books, but also the buildings that house them. From the great dome of the Library of Congress, to the white façade of the Seinäjoki Library in Finland, to the ancient ruins of the library of Pergamum in modern Turkey, the architecture of a library is a symbol of its time as well as of its builders' wealth, culture, and learning. Architectural historian James Campbell and photographer Will Pryce traveled the globe together, visiting and documenting over eighty libraries that exemplify the many different approaches to thinking about and designing libraries." (from the publisher's synopsis)
